How to write a song

I'm borrowing this from http://www.robinfrederick.com/write.html so that's where most of this is coming from.
The first step is to chose a catchy one to five word catchy title. Some I'm thinking of right now are:
  • Razor's Edge
  • A Life To Lose
  • The Quiet of the Night
  • Brown-eyed Girl (everybody else has a song called it...why not join in)
  • Life Just Happens
So I'll chose on of these titles for a quick song-write here in a second. The next step is to ask yourself a number of questions that apply to the song and will make the song connect and relate as a whole as well as to the title. The five W's and one H's or something like that...so if my song was on "Razor's Edge" which it will be, the questions would be:
  • Who or what is razor's edge about?
  • What happened in the story or, what is going on?
  • Where did it take place?
  • When did it take place?
  • Why did it happen or what was the significance?
  • How did it happen, or how did it effect you or your listeners?
Next, make a list of words, phrases, or images suggested by the title. Razor's edge words would be sharp, metal, metallic, cut, knife, weapon, pain, blood, etc. But if the song wasn't explicitly about the edge of a razor and more about life in general, words that express stress and choices, life decisions may be used instead.

Now to get an idea of what I'm thinking or feeling, I generally listen to music that help me get the mood of the song across. Also using Rhymer.com to help with getting the right lyrics on paper is a must unless you have a vast vocabulary...of which I do not.

So here we go...another one - Razor's Edge

Life, like a quilt is made up of little patches
Each one is different and unique in its own way
Some are glorious while others consist of ashes
Choices we make affects our lives pathway

Chorus:
Sometimes the days may be long and tough
Some days you feel like your looking over a ledge
But if give to God your dreams, life and all your stuff
You will find that God will carry you over life's razor edge

Jesus Christ laid His life for yours and mine
He took the pain of death so that we don't have to
All He asks is that we live for Him and shine

i'll finish this up later
